Riya Reji Jacob is a 22 yr old medical student who is currently pursuing MBBS from Bhopal and is passionate about writing since the time she first started penning that is at age of 11. She comes from a christian south Indian family who are settled in north India for more than 50 years now. She has co-authored over 80 anthologies in past one year and believes in cherishing each moments in life. Words can heal you, they can change you – mostly for good! That’s What she often says.

Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers about?

Presently compiling a book that is dedicated to different shades of women . Not projecting this as a feminist but as someone who has seen different emotions and situations a women encounters in her life. Also working on my own book which I believe would be my best.

How many plot ideas are just waiting to be written? Can you tell us about one?

Talking about plot ideas , as a writer we are not inspired by the way that is traditionally believed by people…sometimes we just need a stranger to smile and there starts a new story , at times even the best situations fail to inspire us. From past few weeks i’m really inspired by an emotion which not only makes us who we are but also can make us see who we’re not -that’s “LOVE” … let’s see where this emotion leads me!

Are there Any secrets from the book (that Aren’t in the blurb), you can share with your readers?

Well I’m good at keeping secrets so i guess I’ll prefer to keep that from my lovely readers.

Tell us about your first published book? What and how was the journey ?

My first ever published book was an anthology -“First few lines” under stallions which will always remain special to me . From there my writing journey officially began and I’ll be ever grateful to Abhijit sir and the whole team of stallions who are indeed the best , most dedicated and hardworking publishing house who truly believes in nothing less than perfection. The journey of “First few lines” was amazing and am grateful that it has successfully completed one wonderful year of sharing smiles .

Are you selective about the genre of the book when it comes to writing? What is your preference!

Mostly I try to write in all kinds of genres but I prefer poetry more than anything. It’s like a few words can describe a sea of emotions.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I’ve written over 80 anthologies now and all are special in one way or the other , but more special are the people , emotions or memories which were portrayed in those pages

What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book(s)?

The most surprising thing I’ve discovered is “Pain motivates me”. It inspires me and teaches me to grow with it , to remain grateful for everything and to turn it into my greatest power.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes . I’ve always wished to make a difference through everything I do and using words to make even the smallest changes in someone’s mind is the least I can do as a writer

What inspired you to start writing?

Pain i’ll say and I think that describes it enough.

How long have you been writing?

It’s more than 10 years now

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

There are many elements that make you a good writer but the most important according to me is how deeply you feel things. For me if I can’t feel it , I can’t write it.

What time of the day or night do you usually write?

I usually don’t have a fixed time to write…am more like a go with the flow kind of person.

What has been the most difficult part in the writing for you?

The time when you have thousand thoughts inside your head but fail to write down a single word -that’s the toughest time .

When you’re Writing An emotionally draining (or sexy, or sad, etc) scene, how do you get in the mood?

I just imagine myself in that scenario . It’s draining / hurting but it’s all worth once I finish my work.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I would say when I was in 9th std that would be before 7 years .

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I use simple yet significant words with which people can easily relate to.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

They say -they’re touched , they relate to what I write and that I inspire them. There’s no greater joy than hearing these words from complete strangers .

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

To feel but to not sink in emotions.

Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?

It’s not my full time career but maybe one day. Who knows?!

How do you handle literary criticism?

I take it as constructive criticism because taking it any other way would only cause me harm. That’s what I’ve learnt

What comes first, the plot or characters?

For me -plot

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?

An hour

What advice would you give a new writer, someone just starting out?

Don’t stress out too much , even the best selling writers have their ups and downs . Just be patient enough to write everyday even though you just scribble something totally unrelated to what you intend to write.

How do you do research for your books?

I usually don’t. I like to keep it raw and real.

If you could ask one successful author three questions about their writing, writing process, or books, what would they be?

1)What has changed after they were successful ? 2) What do they usually do when they fail to put their emotions into words? 3) What matters to them -the most ?

If you could cure a disease, what would it be?

cancer and depression.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Yes . I’ve always wished to make a difference through everything I do and using words to make even the smallest changes in someone’s mind is the least I can do as a writer
